Projects

The work, wall by wall.

Rob Fast has been doing handiwork of all kinds since 2013. These are the jobs he puts his name to: a fireplace, a taproom wall, a ceiling, a room sealed up for prep and a hallway of panel moulding.

Stone Fire Place

Before

A fireplace wall of grey and black fieldstone with a natural red brick hearth under a wood mantel

After

The same fireplace with the fieldstone and brick hearth painted white and the wood mantel left natural

Every stone has its own face and a mortar joint around it, so this kind of wall gets painted joint by joint with a brush rather than rolled across the tops. The mantel stayed bare wood, which gives the white stone a single dark line to sit against.

A taproom with a painted blue accent wall, prep gear on the floor and the room lit low

Excelsior Brewing

A taproom with a blue accent wall. One wall in a dark room has to hold its colour under low light, and the floor stays covered while the work goes on.

A ceiling with patched holes, green painter's tape along the edges and plastic sheeting hung below

Ceiling Retexture

Old texture comes off, patches go in, and the ceiling gets a fresh finish. Green tape and plastic keep the room below clean while it happens. About ceiling retexturing.

Detailed Project Prep

Sheeted walls, a sealed room and sanding done before a drop of paint goes on. It's the part of a paint job a homeowner rarely sees and always notices the result of. About surface prep.

Panel moulding

A hallway of panel moulding

Wood strips framed into panels, taped off and covered at the floor, then the wall taken to a deep green-black with white crown and baseboard against it.

The hallway before painting: wood strip panel frames on the wall, taped edges and plastic on the floor
The same hallway after painting: dark green-black panelled wall with white crown moulding and baseboard
